It started in high school…

Other girls were slim and carefree… they were happy.

All their clothes fit them just right. They walked down the hallway and laughed and flipped their hair over their shoulders and I just thought – “wow, they’re so perfect.”

But my clothes did not fit right.

My belt squished the fat on my hips. My thighs were too big for my pants. I’ll never forget the day my English teacher came up to me in front of all of my friends in the lunchroom and told me I needed to pull my pants up – because my butt crack was showing.

I started to diet.

I woke up at 5:00am and got on the stationary bike. I had a small bowl of special K cereal. I went to school – didn’t eat lunch – then came home and got on the stationary bike again.

I had a salad for dinner, and went to bed hungry.

Every morning I stood in front of the bathroom mirror and stood awkward with my legs at funny angles, trying to make a gap between my thighs.

But it didn’t work.

My weight never budged. Sometimes I ate less than 1000 calories a day. I ate no fat. I ate no carbohydrates. I was a strict vegetarian. I ate the foods my dietician told me to – plenty of “heart healthy whole grains.” I followed all of the normal weight loss advice perfectly. You’d think that would be the answer…. But it wasn’t.

Nothing worked. I tried every trick in the book… for more than 13 years.

When women count calories, go on diets, or try to lose weight the “normal” way – it can cause serious damage.

I wasn’t even going to be able to have children because of this.

Then my MOTHER of all people recommended to me this new, unusual diet…

was it my cure?

In 2009, terrified for my health and sanity, my mother wanted to get me help.

She knew that my struggle with my weight was killing me.

It was robbing me of my youth. I was supposed to be out at parties, getting phone numbers, drinking cheap wine, travelling the world… but instead I was trapped in my own version of hell.

She called me. She said, “Now, Stef, I know you’re not going to like this idea – but hear me out, okay?”

“Okay, mom.” I said. I was nervous. I felt defensive already.

“I just read this book about a way of eating… it’s called Paleo. Paleo means that we should be eating foods that our bodies are built for. The way we eat todayis unnatural. A lot of the food you’ve been told is “healthy” is not. It’s making everyone in America sick and overweight.

“I don’t believe it!” I said.

“Why don’t you read the book and find out for yourself?”

I read the book. At first, I highlighted sentences that I wanted to make arguments against. I made specific note of every point I was skeptical of (which was virtually all of them!). I attacked the “paleo diet theory” with vicious intent. There was red ink over all of the pages! BUT by page 60 I was convinced! The author was right about everything!!!

I was so excited that I might have found my miracle cure… I threw away my low-fat salad dressing, I poured my diet soda down the drain. I “went paleo” right away. And by right away I mean right away… I literally ran to the supermarket!

“Hallelujah!” I thought. Or… was it?

After a few months on the paleo diet, I still struggled.

I was still so unhealthy. I was still infertile. I still didn’t have a libido. I didn’t have any energy. I had really strong food cravings. I couldn’t stop my weight from stabilizing without being really obsessive and restrictive.

Why why why!? What was I doing wrong?

 The theory seemed so good!

It seemed like paleo was working for everyone else I talked to… my dad, my brother, my neighbor, famous bloggers…. all the “before and after” photos I was seeing online… Well. The thing is…

The way people usually do paleo is “good enough” for them…

 And definitely if they’re men…

But what about for women?

Is “normal paleo” good enough for women?

There is a BIG problem with “paleo.”

The paleo world – and especially before I started blogging in it – is dominated by men.

Most of the authors were men. The bloggers were men. The researchers were men.

Almost none of them stopped to consider how the diets they recommended might differently affect women!

When I first started eating paleo, I thought I had found my miracle. But…

I was actually trying diet tips and tricks built for men!

Female Weight Loss is Special

There’s one BIG difference between male and female bodies: hormones.

The problem is, most people don’t know how important hormones are.
